A guy reading poetry to a bunch of confused Nazi skinheads.

Request from Josh F. - who is an amazing poet and does not resemble the poet pictured.  And does not write odes to donuts.

A grass lawn magically turning into a garden.

Request from Cyd M.

You can tell it's magic because of all the sparkly whimsical popping occurring around the foliage.

Cynical, bitter, angry, and crude.

Request (indirectly) from James K., who, commenting on my facebook photo album, stated, "All my suggestions are only cynical, bitter, angry, and crude."  I decided to give him a laugh and indulge his inadvertent request.

He was very happy with the resulting picture, telling me the caricatures remind him of a game he used to play as a kid in Germany.   Total kuhl!

Two birds flying through music scales.

Request from Kelsy A.

I had to draw upon my 18 years of piano for this one. I was never very good at reading music (Suzuki kids learned by ear instead).

A superhero known as Ultrafro.

Request from Scott C.
I was at Drink&Draw the other night working on this one, and we decided that Ultrafro's power came from his nuclear afro.  So powerful, in fact, it has permanently altered the pigmentation of his skin.
Other ideas welcome.

A galaxy in the form of a hand giving the finger to a galaxy nearby in the shape of a gun.

Request from Sater K.
Yes, that was really the request. This is the only picture that I've altered in photoshop, but all I did was invert it, and it looks waaaaay cooler. STFU already.
:D

Be Brave Bold Robot.

Request from Dean H., who is the singer and musician behind Be Brave Bold Robot - the band and formerly the zine.

Back in the days of the zine, I picked up a few that I thought looked interesting (they were interesting!). I kept them throughout the years and even cut one up and put some pieces into a painting of mine. More years went by, and I stumbled across the zines in a pile of collage materials I had dragged with me across the country and back. I saw the email address and decided to write an email. It went like this:

greetings!

this letter is going to be strange to write, so please forgive me for my lack of eloquence. i will admit first of all that i have never seen your band, but that this letter is regarding the zine "be brave bold robot".   i am wondering if this is something you are still working on and perhaps where i may find it. i was working on an art project the other day and came across three issues from 2001 i think, and felt compelled to track down your current email address.

so if nothing else, please take this as a token of my appreciation for a zine that made me happy many times over...

Dean wrote back to me, and was super kind and generally awesome all around. We corresponded a bit, and ended up connecting on facebook.  Turns out we had a bunch of mutual friends (none of whom knew each other). It took me another year or so, but I went to one of his shows and bought him a drink. He gave me a wonderful hug and are still in touch. I love going to BBBR shows and I will continue to support them however possible.

Here's one way of giving back :)  Love ya, Dean!

Ouroboros.

Request from Sarah PM.
She and I both have an affinity for the Ouroboros, or self-consuming reptile.  I have a tattoo of an ouroboros on my back (my least favorite tattoo for other reasons, so I'm glad I don't have to look at it).  I just wish that I had drawn my own tattoo, that's all.

The symbol itself shows up in a multitude of cultures and eras. It is symbolic of the cycles of creation and destruction, and the ironical paradox of consuming oneself for sustenance. Groovy.

Do a google image search for ouroboros and see what you find. I love seeing peoples' interpretations of the same image.

Cow of sleep.

Request from my buddy Jimmy C.
One day, Jimmy came over and, being the nice guy he is, brought me a book of poems. i started flipping through the pages and came to the realization that these were the worst poems on the face of the planet.  We started reading them with our best T.S. Eliot voices and were soon laughing to the point of tears.

I can't remember the name of the poem, or the poet, for that matter - but if you are the author of the Cow of Sleep poem, you have my condolences.

An egg laying a chicken.

Request from Kiny M.
Note the asshole coach. You try shoving a chicken out of you, man!
For the purpose of this drawing, I also had to invent the support legs for the purpose of chicken-birthing eggs.  Patent pending.

A turtle.

Request from Wendy R.
This little guy reminds me of a baby turtle that swam right past me (almost right into me) when I was scuba diving in Hawaii.

A cartoon bunny in love with Super Chicken.

Request from Cyd M.

Originally the plan was to do a full bodied bunny, but I think this way there is much more focus on the love in her eyes.

A bear and a lioness in love.

Request From Kelsey A.
The entire request was "A bear and a lioness in love. Like their back profiles. With hearts..."
I believe I fulfilled every part of that request.  And this one was heart-warming :)

A sad mouse, wrapped in bacon.

Request from Steve H. - who is another talented artist friend of mine!

I don't know why this mouse is so sad. Look at all that bacon.

A broken-hearted platypus with Ray-Ban glasses.

Request from Vivian S.
Even his bubbles reflect his submerged anguish.

The face of capitalism.

Request from Reggie B., who asked for "The Face of capitalism, as you see it."

I didn't want to be too politically driven, so I decided to take the opportunity for a nice cubism exercise.  Fun stuff!

Something hot dog related.

Request from Beti P.
She just started an amazing painting involving a hot dog. She's an awesome artist. You can see her tumblr here.

Lesbian snakes.

Request from Heather F. (by proxy).
Ain't these cobras cute?  They have matching tattoos.

Interpretations of red and blue.

Request from Howard Y.
Red and blue are both websites, and Howard asked for my interpretation of the personalities of each site.  It ended up being more qualitative descriptions of each site, but it was a creative request nonetheless and he said my drawing was "spot on!" Which is very kind and British of him :).  Thanks, Howard.

A sexy spider with an Al Pacino face.

Request from John W. Sr.
The sexy part is the enormous cleavage (if you couldn't tell) and the heart-patterned nightie.  Also, smoking is sexy in a film noir way.

Paula Deen riding the General Lee.

Request from Melanie D., who apparently knows cars are my achilles heel.
Paula Deen - also not my forte.  I cheated and used photoshop to come up with the lovely photo below.

I could have cheated even farther and photoshopped the Paula Deen photo onto a photo of the General Lee, but I had other drawing requests to fulfill - and hey, this isn't about photoshop and what I can do poorly with the program.

A slice of pizza eating itself.

Request from Brooke O., who just reinforced her place as one of my favorite people in the world.
This ouroboros-esqe culinary delight was a difficult request, but I made it happen in about a minute.  Here's another one that I'd like to explore again in a more realistic format.

Note the crazed pepperoni eyes.

Side note: I have an ouroboros tattoo.

Narwhal with an ice cream cone.

Request from Tiffany L., a high school buddy.
This was one of my favorites to draw. The dots were fun!
(Please excuse the poor photoshop job in the left of the picture. The straws were in the way!)

A fish with an old man head.

Request from Kiny M.
She said she had the idea in her head for a long time.  I was happy to sublimate it for her.  I would like to explore this one sometime when I have more art materials and more than 30 seconds!

Straws.

Request from my step-brother Christopher D, who told me to draw straws.  He thought he was being clever, but clearly I am cleverer. We're not so different...

A unicorn, a rainbow, and smiles.

Request by Eric S.
He also requested I send him an autographed original, which I was happy to do.

Jessica says, "draw me"

I made several attempts but nothing would capture her beauty and loveliness. Sorry this is a poor substitute! Hearts :)
